Gamification, the concept of applying elements of game-playing to non-game activities, is growing in importance as a tool to help drive a higher performing cyber security organization. The use of gamification is key to winning the fight against cyber criminals in the face of the skills’ shorExpertisee. In addition, employers that are implementing gaming elements within the enterprise are more likely to attract highly skilled employees and keep them motivated.

  • Boss of the SOC Exercise. Splunk: In a Boss of the SOC event you play in groups of 1-4 people and compete against other participants. In the competition, your team role plays as the quirky Security Analyst "Alice Bluebird” who goes from organization to organization helping investigate security incidents using Splunk. Each team is presented with a list of questions of varying difficulty through an automated BOTS scoring server. Easy questions are worth fewer points; hard questions are worth more. All questions require you to use Splunk and other open source intelligence resources. Just like the real world.
  • Using gamification and cyber range technologies to address the security skills gap. Almerindo Graziano, CEO of Silensec
By 2019 at least 1.5 million security jobs will be left vacant. Regardless of the exact number, what cannot be argued is that every organization faces the following problems: 1) finding skilled security professionals 2) (re)training the current work force 3) ensuring an adequate level of security awareness. Unfortunately the security training and certification market has become highly commoditized, offering many tick-box solutions, without addressing the growing security skills gap. This presentation will address the benefits of training gamification and cyber range technologies to address the security skills gap while at the same time creating the next-generation of security professionals.
