IAS - Belgium's Leading Event in Industrial Automation Security

IAS was established for organizations that are involved in industrial- based process automation and control. Due to the constant evolution of control processes and automation systems, as well as their underlying platforms on which they operate, each day new possibilities are discovered that could pose serious security risks to those systems. Further automation (smart factories, internet of things, industrial internet) has led to an increase of targeted attacks on industrial systems. For the proper functioning of business it is important to evaluate the potential risks, assess them, and take proper counter measures, and this is what we aim to cover at IAS

  • Impact of the NIS Directive on Industrial Companies | Vincent Haerinck, industrial cyber security leader, Toreon
    On July 6, 2018 the NIS (Network and Information System) Directive was enacted as the first EU-wide legislation that provides measures to boost security across the region. Under the law, operators of essential services are required to abide by the requirements of the new regulations, aimed to strengthen the security of critical infrastructures and allied information systems. While the NIS Directive’s requirements will be familiar to IT departments, they are likely to present new challenges for operational technology (OT) teams. In addition, traditional tools used in IT environments will lack the core capabilities to monitor and provide visibility into proprietary ICS devices. During his talk, Vincent will elaborate on the current state of affairs on NIS and its implementation in Belgium, the impact on companies that are subjected, and how companies can best address these requirements. Vincent will demonstrate the practical implications based on an [ anonymized ] implementation by Toreon.

  • Incident Response Use Case: TITRON Attack & Framework on Industrial Control Systems | Rob Caldwell, Senior Manager – ICS/OT Security at Mandiant Consulting [ USA ].
    Mandiant responded to an incident at a critical infrastructure organization where an attacker deployed malware designed to manipulate industrial safety systems. The targeted systems provided emergency shutdown capability for industrial processes. Mandiant assessed with moderate confidence that the attacker was developing the capability to cause physical damage and inadvertently shutdown operations. This malware, which we call TRITON, is an attack framework built to interact with Triconex Safety Instrumented System (SIS) controllers. Mandiant tracked the development back to [ most likely ] Russian Government-Owned Lab that built custom intrusion tools for TRITON Attackers.

The ConnectedFactories project establishes a structured overview of available and upcoming technological approaches and best practices. The project identifies present and future needs, as well as challenges, of the manufacturing industries. The project will explore pathways to the digital integration and interoperability of manufacturing systems and processes (“future visions”). Hence, ConnectedFactories will enhance the awareness among companies of the use of digital technologies in the manufacturing sector, but also equip them with knowledge to make informed decisions regarding technology and business model choices. It will reinforce the European manufacturing industries’ position in the international scene. Within Connected Factories LSEC leads the activities related to the cyber security risks that are involved and how to support innovation by counter measuring these risks

3IF.BE: 3IF supports the automation industry at large and manufacturers in particular, to seize the opportunity from digital transformation and the utilization of Industrial Internet developments. 3IF.be helps companies transforming into Industrie 4.0 and Industrial Internet companies by utilizing Sensors, Big Data and IoT considering its practical implications on the factory floor. It Identifies the relevance, urgency, benefits and adoption level of IIoT Solutions for business, and develops innovation plans to achieve goals in becoming factories of the future and to enable cost reduction and quality improvement

TRINITY DIH, A network of digital innovation hubs in Advanced Robotics: The main objective of TRINITY is to create a network of digital innovation hubs (DIHs) composed of Research Centers and University Groups specialized in Advanced Robotics and Internet of Things (IoT), supported by a DIH with experts in Robotics Cyber security to contribute to novel robotics solutions that will increase agility in production. Trinity has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 825196
