San Francisco February 29th, 2016
The annual information security conference taking place in San Francisco has reached another heighlight in its 25 years existence. The conference is recognised as one of the leading gatherings for information security and cyber security experts. The week in San Francisco gathered this year over 40.000 attendees and more than 500 exhibitors on its massive exhibition space. The conference was animated with 10 parallell track per hour on a daily basis between Tuesday and Friday morning. Almost 1000 sessions took place.
This year's conference continued taking Cyber Security management to a next level, putting a lot of attention on advanced analytics, advanced exploits of both MacOS, Critical Infrastructures, evolutions of cloud security management and a continued focus on Privacy. While the quality of the contributions varied: some of the panel debates were thought provoking and provided new insights; some presentations were interesting, but didn't reach the level of in depth advancement as expected and apart from the Microsoft perspective on transparancy, especially the keynotes in the main program lacked sufficient vision and leadership. Many of the presentations are available online and should serve as discussion debate for information security professionals and their technology and services providers to investigate further advancement. An increasing European delegate representation is calling for a European focused conference of a similar posture. Participants from our partners and members of CERT.EU, INCIBE, ECO, TeleTrust, EOS,NVISO, KBC, Sophos, Vasco Data Security, ISABEL, KU Leuven, ... and many others were able to differentiate between European and North American experiences. European expertise is of a similar and sometimes better quality than their counterparts, but there is no doubt that the North American market is far more mature and advanced, allowing for more advanced and in depth mature debate. This calls for a level of thought leadership in Europe that is available, has been identified, but should provide efforts in getting together on an annual basis.
Apart from this, all European experts should send a delegation on an annual basis to meet up with their American, Asian, Middle Eastern and African counterparts, and the RSA Conference will continue to lead as one of the global Information Security Conferences.
Looking forward to another thought provoking and qualitative 2017 version.
